About Me

1950s child, gave up coloring gray hair in 1996 (when it was still “premature”), weight (ahem) variable, around 5 and a half feet tall. Never married, no kids, haven’t dated in years. They’ve never said anything, but I think my family thinks I’m gay (I’m not, Birks notwithstanding). Originally from New York City, now live in L.A.

Musical, verbal, tactile, emotional but you might have to know me a little while to see that. Introverted. Analytical. Rarely remember dreams. But I believe in astrology, collect healing stones, and have been a tarot reader since 1977. I have no idea what my IQ is.

No animals (allergic), no plants (I kill ’em). Don’t eat meat, but do eat seafood. Don’t try to feed me; between food allergies and some violent aversions, I’m a pain in the ass about food. Just let me take care of it.

Mom had me ironing at 4 and sewing soon after; crocheted in grade school, learned to knit then too but never made anything. Re-learned when I got a finishing job in a yarn store in 1981, and was off and running. Knitted in near perfect isolation for years and years. Gave away most of what I knitted. Still do.

Taught myself to knit lace doilies during a stretch of unemployment in 1983. Crochet cotton is way cheaper than yarn, and a complicated doily can keep me busy and interested as long as a complicated sweater can.

After looking for a spinning class or teacher for years, finally found the Greater Los Angeles Spinning Guild in January 2004 and learned to spin! Also made a bunch of new friends. Most knit as well as spin; they “get” me. Isolation over! Then started going to Stitch’n’Bitch in West Hollywood. Also joined a knitting guild, but it’s kind of far away so I don’t get there much.

Worked as a secretary, legal and otherwise, for most of my adult life, and hated every minute of it. Now focusing on teaching knitting, writing my knitting book, designing and whatever else I can think of to make knitting pay my way. We’ll see how I do…

  1. Kathy,

Worked 10 years as a legal secretary also, hated almost all of it, but did make a few friends. Had much more fun working for a court reporting firm (they hate lawyers too — you have heard the one “Question: Why does New Jersey have more toxic dumps than New York has lawyers? Answer: New Jersey got to pick first!”.

Worse than working as a legal secretary is working in computer tech support. My last tech support job was with the New York Attorney General’s Office. The employees were happy to have us. But the group of techies I worked with told many horror stories… Plus, I hate tech support people: They have no sympathy for the users, and don’t know how to write code! (I am 3 elective courses short of a B.S. in Computer Science from Barnard College, and have a Certificate in C/C++ programming — hence it was fairly easy for me to write and easily modify the Knitting Chart Maker Excel Template I will soon be selling (sorry for the Ad - I can promote your stuff on my group — will get details later). I love computer science but hate commercial programming practices, hence I have no regrets about not getting work as a programmer.

Am a Leo with moon in Pisces (10th house), Mars Sagittarius (7th house), Venus Libra (5th house). Gotta get back to other stuff. Hope this makes you laugh!

  5. Kathy,
I stumbled upon your website while searching for some large teacups for my brother and wife. You mentioned owning some 18 and 20 oz cups. Are you able to turn me on to any websites that carry such large cups? So far I have been unsuccessful in my search.
By the way, my wife knits too and is fascinated by the “teacup panties”. I printed your instructions and she’s searching for scrap yarn right now. Hope that you can turn me on to some jumbo teacups.
    Thanks
